The St. Michele ai Nuovi Sepolcri complex in Milan is also known as Foppone dell'Ospedale (hospital cemetery) or Rotonda della Besana. The Rotonda is one of the most creative works of art in the 18.th century in Milan. It has a strange architecture: the church with a Greek cross plant and with the central octagon topped with a dome, is surrounded by a graceful cloister with a curvilinear plant. The building, that in the past was used both as a church and as a cemetery, was built between 1713 and 1725. After having been used for different purposes for many years, the Rotonda was eventually restaured and upgraded by the municipality of Milan and now it hosts important art events and famous exhibitions.
